A major airline asked GCS to evaluate the drive wheels that are currently being used on its automated baggage handling system at one its key airports. The airline was experiencing significant wear on the system’s drive wheels, requiring 500-1,000 wheels to be replaced every month. The existing wheel uses a two-piece design consisting of an aluminum hub and urethane tread. In four months GCS designed a one-piece, single-use wheel that lasts longer than the conventional wheel and eliminates the need to continually monitor and retread wheels. GCS was able to save the airline significant inventory and maintenance costs.
