Globe Composite Solutions Introduces Non-Toxic Material to Replace Lead

Environmentally-friendly Brandonite® 4210 (patents pending) composite material replaces lead-based components in most healthcare imaging, industrial and defense-related applications.

Dallas TX and Rockland MA, January 31, 2008 — Globe Composite Solutions, Ltd. announced today that it has developed a new castable material, Brandonite 4210® that provides the same radiographic shielding and sound-deadening benefits of lead and lead-oxide materials without the inherent toxicity associated with lead.  Globe scientists developed this unique high gravity material at its Rockland MA location and has filed for patent protection.

Brandonite 4210® is a new family of lead-free composite materials that replaces lead and lead oxide materials that are traditionally used in medical, industrial and defense-related applications, such as imaging, X-ray housings, aprons, and radioisotope and syringe housings.  Products containing lead are generally toxic and require special handling, transporting, reporting and disposing.  According to the 2006 U.S. Geological Survey, 1.6 million metric tons of lead-based materials were produced or consumed in the United States and 1.2 million metric tons were recovered as scrap.

“We have successfully developed a lead replacement material that we believe will radically change how companies design and offer products that traditionally contain lead”, said Dr. Xiujun Wang, Director of Polymer Technologies at Globe Composite Solutions.  “With Brandonite 4210®  customers now have greater design and manufacturing flexibility, thanks to its unique liquid casting properties and wide range of densities and related performance characteristics.”

Brandonite 4210® is a liquid castable material which allows parts to be manufactured using conventional liquid casting technologies.  Now, our customers can offer lead replacement parts made cost-effectively with complicated geometries or demanding tolerance requirements.  Additionally, Brandonite 4210® can be machined and is available in a wide variety of colors, giving product developers greater design capabilities.

“With increasingly stringent regulatory oversight of lead-based products globally, Brandonite 4210® provides a solution that benefits both manufacturers and end-users”, said Carl W. Forsythe, President and CEO of Globe.  “More importantly, our environment is the biggest winner since Brandonite 4210® will help reduce the use and disposal of lead-based products, where nearly 881 million pounds of materials containing lead are absorbed into the US environment every year”, he added.
